VERO BEACH, Fla. ---- The Massasoit baseball team spent its spring break down in Vero Beach, Fla., at Historic Dodgertown playing nine games in seven days. The Warriors finished the trip with a record of 2-7, gaining valuable playing experience prior to the start of the Region 21 regular season.
The aforementioned regular season for Massasoit begins Thursday, March 24 with a road contest at UConn Avery Point slated for 3:30 p.m.
The Warriors played some stiff competition down south and despite a losing record had plenty of bright spots in the Sunshine State.
Top Performances:
Jake Stearns (Plymouth), LHP vs. Marshalltown CC -- W, 4-1
Stearns spun a complete game two hitter as the Warriors defeated NJCAA Division I opponent Marshalltown CC. The sophomore southpaw fanned five and walked two to earn the victory. Stearns allowed just three base runners from the third inning on and retired the side in order in four of his final five innings of work.
Zack Reid (Dighton), RHP vs. Hagerstown CC -- L, 1-0
In the season opener, Reid suffered a tough-luck loss, despite allowing only two hits and one unearned run. The sophomore struck out three and walked one over six innings in his first outing of the season.
Liam Richmond (Hingham), RHP vs. Kirkwood CC -- L, 5-0
In relief, Richmond produced the best outing of his career, but the Warriors still fell to Kirkwood, 5-0. The sophomore entered the game with Massasoit trailing 5-0 after three innings of action and was nearly untouchable on the mound. Richmond went the next four innings yielding only one hit and striking out three in the no decision.
Tyler Morini (Plymouth), DH
For the trip, Morini produced in the middle of the lineup for the Warriors. The sophomore hit at a team-best .455 (10-for-22) batting average and tallied a .556 on-base percentage. Morini hit safely in seven of eight games played, including a perfect 3-for-3 performance in the 10-8 win over Ontario Academy.
Evan McSherry (Halifax), OF
A true freshman, McSherry hit .375 (6-for-16) in six games for Massasoit. His biggest hit of the trip came against Marshalltown CC. The Warriors had been no-hit entering the fifth, when McSherry started the frame with a single igniting a three-run rally in the upset victory.
Kevin Huscher (Middleboro), SS vs. Marshalltown CC -- W, 4-1
In his first season with the Warriors, Huscher connected for one of if not the biggest hit of the 2016 season so far for Massasoit. Tied 1-1 against Marshalltown CC, Huscher drilled a two-run double in the fifth inning, proving to be the game-winning hit against the NJCAA Division I foe.
