Reid’s Stellar Outing Spoiled As Warriors Fall To Hagerstown 1-0 To Open Season

VERO BEACH, Fla. ---- Sophomore Zack Reid (Dighton) quieted a potent Hagerstown CC (Maryland) offense, but a third inning unearned run proved to be the difference as the Massasoit baseball team fell in its season opener, 1-0, at Historic Dodgertown on Friday.

Hagerstown improved to a perfect 11-0 on the season and entered the contest averaging 11.6 runs and hitting .355 as a team. The Hawks, an NJCAA Division I program, were silenced by the right arm of Reid (0-1) who went the distance, yielding only two hits and allowing just the one unearned run. Reid struck out three and walked one in the tough-luck complete game loss.

"Zack was outstanding today and extremely efficient. He only threw 82 pitches in seven innings," head coach Tom Frizzell said. "The Hagerstown coach (Scott Jennings) said that we gave them the best game of the season so far."

The lone run of the contest came in the third. A passed ball on a strikeout allowed Hagerstown to put a runner at second with one out. Following a walk, a miscue at third allowed the only run of the game to come home. Reid escaped further damage by inducing a double play to end the frame.

"I've always said if you keep the walks and errors totals under five, you win the game," Frizzell said. "That total was three today, so I felt we should have won, but we will need to get going offensively and hope to rebound."

On the opposing side, Hagerstown lefty Joey Catalani (2-0) was just as effective, allowing only two hits and keeping the Warrior offense off balance. He fanned seven and walked two in the win.

"(Catalani) pitched well for them. He was a four pitch guy that really mixed up and we kept getting out in front and grounding out. We must have hit 10 grounders to the left side," Frizzell said.

Kevin Huscher (Middleboro) and Jimmy Lawless (Hull) supplied the lone hits for the Warriors in the loss.
