Warriors Close Out Regular Season In Walk-Off Fashion

BROCKTON, Mass. ---- Pat Murray (Weymouth) singled in Nick Oliviera (New Bedford) with one-out in the bottom of the ninth to cap a four-run rally and give the Massasoit Community College baseball team a walk-off 10-9 victory against Bunker Hill CC on Monday.

With the dramatic finish, the Warriors close out the regular season at 21-10 overall and 14-1 in divisional games within Region XXI. Massasoit earned the top seed and will host the Region XXI Tournament beginning this Friday.

"All you can really say about this game is that we wore them down," head coach Tom Frizzell said. "Two big hits by Oliveira with three RBI and of course Murray with his second walk-off of the year. It was a nice job by Ross to come in and keep them from scoring in the ninth and Devine pitched well in relief once he settled down."

Massasoit fell behind 8-0 in the early goings of the contest, but the home squad kept chipping away at the Bulldog lead.

The Warrior scored in every frame from the fifth inning on, including three in the fifth, one in the sixth, seventh and eighth prior to the ninth inning heroics.

Down 9-6 in the bottom of the ninth, Matt Levasseur (Milton) got the ball rolling for the Warriors by drawing a leadoff walk. Joe Walsh (Taunton) followed by reaching on an error in front of a RBI double off the bat of Russ Boudreau (Norton).

With runners on second and third, Oliveira clubbed a two-run single to center to plate both Walsh and Boudreau to knot the game at 9-all. Following a strikeout, Travis Ritchie (Taunton) blooped a single to left to put Oliveira into scoring position.

That set the stage for Murray, who sliced a ball down the right-field line, just out of reach for the BHCC fielder, allowing Oliveira to race home and beat a bang-bang play at the plate for the game-winning run.

Oliveira finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, while walk-off-hero Murray knocked in three in the win.  Murray also had a walk-off single back on April 12 against Northern Essex CC.

Walsh added two hits and two runs for the Warriors and Boudreau and Levassuer each touched home twice as well.

Ross (1-1) earned his first collegiate win out of the Warrior bullpen, tossing a scoreless ninth.

Sam Devine pitched six innings in relief of starter Corey Walker (North Attleboro) who lasted only two frames. Devine allowed four earned runs, but only one after his first inning of work. The lefty struck out three.
