Baseball Wins Fourth In A Row With 6-5 Victory Vs. UCAP

BROCKTON, Mass. ---- Luke Nagle (Pembroke) recorded the final two outs with the tying run in scoring position to help the Massasoit Community College baseball team claim its fourth straight victory, with a 6-5 win against the University of Connecticut at Avery Point on Thursday.

Massasoit (8-7) avenged a 2-1 loss to the Pointers earlier in the season.

The Warriors found themselves in a 3-1 hole in the bottom of the fourth, but busted out the bats to touch home four times and take a 5-3 advantage. The big hit in the inning was from freshman catcher Nick Oliviera (New Bedford), who clubbed a game tying two-run single. Later in the frame, David Murphy (Plymouth) put Massasoit ahead with a RBI single of his own.

The Warriors would tack on an insurance run later in the contest, which proved to be big.

Tom Protentis (Lakeville) picked up the win on the mound for the Warriors working the first five innings. Collin Ross (Marshfield) pitched great out the bullpen, working the next 3.1 innings.

UCAP pulled within one in the ninth off a solo homer. Following a walk, Nagle was called in for the save situation. The righty needed just five pitches to get the final two outs and preserve the one-run victory.

"Nagle is really coming along for us, especially on the mound," head coach Tom Frizzell said. "In 14.2 innings he has allowed only one earned run. That is very impressive."

Four Warriors finished with multi-hit games, led by Patrick Murray (Weymouth) who produced three hits and one RBI. Travis Ritchie (Taunton), Murphy and Oliviera all added two hits in the box score.

"This sets us up nicely and has us in a good pattern for a big series this Saturday against Northern Essex," Frizzell said. "They have two very live arms and will be a challenge for us."

The Warriors host Northern Essex for a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is set for Noon in Brockton.
