Rui Estrela enters his 15th season in 2021 at the helm of the Massasoit men’s soccer program.

In 2019, the Warriors went 8-1-1 in the month of October on the way to capturing their 13th Region 21 Championship in 14 seasons under Estrela. The regional title also marked the 28th in program history as Massasoit advanced to the NJCAA Northeast District Semifinals. A total of six student-athletes were selected to the All-Region 21 First Team as Massasoit came just two games shy of reaching the NJCAA National Tournament.

During the 2015 season, Estrela led the Warriors to another outstanding and historic season, finishing 13-8 overall, capturing the Region 21 Championship and finishing runners up at the Northeast District Championship en route to qualifying for the NJCAA National Tournament for the first time since 1995.

Massasoit captured the Region 21 Championship by defeating nationally ranked and previously unbeaten Dean College on the road, 4-3, in double overtime. Forward Andrew Revanales netted the game-winning golden goal with 52 seconds left in the second overtime period for the victory.

The Warriors went on to defeat Monroe Community College in the district semifinals, 2-0, before falling in the district finals to ASA New York, but advanced to the Nationals with an automatic bid.

At the NJCAA Nationals, the Warriors battled top-seed and eventual NJCAA National Champion Louisburg College, falling 3-1, before dropping a 1-0 decision to No. 8 seed Iowa Western CC.

Estrela was awarded for his efforts on the sidelines following the historic run in 2015 by being named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) East Region Coach of the Year. Massasoit also had Andrew Revalanes named an NSCAA All-American, four student-athletes named to the NSCAA All-East Region Team and five more players named to the All-Region 21 Team.

The awards kept piling in 2015 under Estrela as Massasoit earned a National Player of the Week honor by either the NJCAA or NSCAA eight total times and the Warriors finished ranked No. 20 in the final NJCAA DI rankings.

Estrela has showcased consistency along with success during his tenure, winning 11 NJCAA Region XXI Championships and 12 straight seasons of double-digit victories. Overall, he has been associated with the Warriors’ soccer program for 17 years, spending two years as a student-athlete and three as an assistant coach.

On October 16, 2013, Estrela captured his 100th career collegiate coaching victory, all at Massasoit, against rival Dean College. He joined NJCAA Hall of Famer Nick Palantzas as the only other men’s soccer coach to reach 100 wins with the Warriors.

The Warriors have racked up the awards under the watchful eye of Estrela. A total of 78 student-athletes have been named All-Region XXI and six have garnered NJCAA All-American accolades over his 14 years on the sidelines.

Estrela began his collegiate coaching career while completing his Bachelors of Arts in Business Information Systems at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. He served as an assistant coach for the men’s program for three seasons (1998-2000).

Estrela returned to Brockton to be on the Massasoit coaching staff at the start of the 2003 campaign as an assistant. Estrela helped guide the Warriors to back-to-back New England Championships in 2004 and 2005 before taking over as head coach in 2006.

During his playing career at Massasoit, Estrela was a catalyst in leading the Warriors to consecutive NJCAA New England Championships in 1992 and 1993 as the team also finished in third at the NJCAA National Tournament both seasons.

After two seasons as a Warrior, Estrela transferred to the University of Hartford on a full scholarship to compete for the Hawks’ men’s soccer program.

Estrela currently resides in Somerset, Mass., with his wife Donna and their two daughters, Sophia and Grace.
